Godalming Schools Hit By Teachers Strike

Several state schools in the Godalming area fell victim to today's national strike by teachers.

A string of local schools were forced to close completely are remained partially closed because of the action over staff pensions.
Rodborough School at Witley near Godalming remained partially open despite the action, leaving a skeleton staff to teach only Year 10 Pupils. All other pupils at the school enjoyed an enforced day off as teachers took part in the one day strike.
A school spokesperson told godalmingpeople that due to regulations, other qualified teaching staff who were not members of the teaching unions involved were not allowed to stand in for their striking colleagues.
Only the headmaster and deputy head teacher were able to carry out teaching classes, which meant that only Year 10 pupils were taught in the classroom.
Elsewhere in the Godalming area. Broadwater School at Farncombe, Green Oak C Of E Primary & Nursery School,Busbridge C Of E (Aided) Junior School,Witley Church Of England Infant School were all forced to close.
More than a quarter of Surrey's schools were closed or partially closed because of the strike action.
The action was taken by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL).
