Councillor Julia  (Liz) Wheatley has been elected as Godalming Town Mayor for the coming year it was revealed today.

Nominating Liz Wheatley, who has been a Councillor since 2007, Councillor AndrewWilson spoke explained:

"A mayor needs many qualities, the ability to empathise with people, strength of character and the willingness to take the initiative, enormous stamina to carry out all mayoral engagements and the ability to keep smiling while trying to remember where they are, why they are there and who everyone is – all criteria that Liz possesses – she will pass with flying colours."

The newly-elected Mayor said "This is an incredible privilege and I am immensely grateful to the whole Council for having such confidence in me.  I look forward to getting to know all the amazing people who keep our town going with their selfless work and dedication to the community.  I have decided to go for one charity, which is to be the Waverley CAB,  who I believe is best placed to help the largest number of people at their time of need in these difficult financial times."

Speaking for Waverley CAB, Phil Davies said:  "We have always enjoyed a very positive working partnership with Godalming Town Council and are delighted to have been chosen as the Mayor's Charity for 2012-13.

In the light of the worrying recent economic trends it is more important than ever that local people have access to high quality, free and independent help with issues such as debt, benefits entitlements, employment rights and relationships.

This additional financial support will help us to ensure that we continue to meet this increasing need."

Councillor Tom Martin was elected as Deputy Mayor.
