What chaos!

Anyone who was out on the road around Godalming going no-where fast over this weekend might have noticed that the A3 has been to allow tree felling work around the new Hindhead tunnel to go ahead.

Okay, I appreciate that the work has to be done at some time. But did the planners who thought up this exercise think where all the traffic that normally use the A3 (especially at peak hours) might end up going?

It was bad enough on Friday evening seeing carriageways on the A3 blocked with cars attempting the long journey home (admittedly not going very far quickly). But since then, with the complete closure over the rest of the weekend traffic has had to be diverted through the other arteries such as Brook Road and Chiddingfold Roads.

These roads have become so busy (like a constant rush hour) that they’re busy, noisy and dangerous. For those living along the roads affected, it’s like living alongside a motorway!
The work being carried out means that trees and scrub alongside the A3 are being cleared over two weekends ahead of the opening of the new Hindhead tunnel.
The trees and vegetation have grown up along the existing road at the Devil's Punchbowl over the past 50 years, reducing the area's heathland. But when the tunnel is opened in 2011, the old road will be returned to nature, with the tunnel carrying traffic.
Okay, the work has to be done, but could the planners have found a better way of doing this?
