I've just heard some worrying news, which I think hammers in another nail in the coffin of Godalming High Street.

It seems that the Apollo video and game rental shop in the High Street is in danger of closing, as the owners try desperately to negotiate a new lease for the propertrty, which is struggling to cope with financial olosses that are effecting the home entertainment market.

The shop could close within a few weeks if no agreement on lease terms can be reached. Not only would that mean that Godalming would be without any video rental store (which so many residents rely on) in the area, but would also mean that yet another important face on the High Street (and any other town centre High St) would be lost. That would mean that our High Street would comprise even more of the usual stock of coffee bars, charity shops and estate agents that exists at present.

Understandably, Apollo is suffering profit losses because of a whole range of reasons beyond its control...such as the lack of top movies being made, the increasing trend of downloading movies from the internet leading to a lack of demand.

But the truth is, having a entertainment leisure rental shop in Godalming is essential. Otherwise the town High Street must certainly be seen to be dying. Let's hope the lease probem can be solved for our Godalming Apollo.

Maybe shopping guru Mary 'Queen Of Shops' Portas who has been invited by PM David Cameron to look into the problems facing the look of the modern day High Street should be asked to intervene.
